What it means
The control circuit for the engine disconnect clutch actuator reports a circuit/open condition. Hybrid driveline coupling cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch actuator controls coupling between the engine and the hybrid driveline. The control module monitors the actuator circuit; P287E sets when that circuit is open, so the clutch cannot be commanded reliably and engine-to-driveline coupling may be unavailable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in actuator control wire
- Open actuator coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan the hybrid and transmission modules for related actuator, power-supply, or communication codes.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect the engine disconnect clutch actuator connector for a backed-out pin, loose fit, or corrosion.
- Trace the accessible actuator wiring for breaks, chafing, or damage that could leave the circuit open.
- Test circuit continuity and actuator coil operation using the manufacturer’s wiring information and specification.
- If the wiring and connector are intact, verify the actuator control circuit at the module using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Seat a pushed-back or loose actuator connector pin correctly and secure the connector.
- Repair an open or damaged wire in the actuator control circuit.
- Repair or replace an engine disconnect clutch actuator with an open coil.
- Repair a confirmed open connection at the actuator control module or its connector.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the vehicle cannot couple the engine and hybrid driveline reliably, or if it shifts unpredictably or enters limp mode. Because the fault involves a hybrid drivetrain, follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and recovery guidance and do not handle high-voltage components.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
