OBD-II fault code

P28F5: Engine Disconnect Clutch Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The engine disconnect clutch pressure sensor signal drops out or jumps intermittently. Loose connector or noisy ground reference.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine disconnect clutch pressure sensor provides a changing signal so the hybrid control module can follow clutch engagement pressure. This code sets when the signal jumps or drops out intermittently rather than remaining stable, often because vibration disrupts a connector or ground reference.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review scan-tool data for pressure signal dropouts alongside related hybrid or transmission codes.
  2. Inspect the pressure sensor connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, loose terminals, or moisture, and check the nearby harness for chafing.
  3. With the vehicle safely stationary, monitor the pressure signal while gently moving the harness and connector to see whether vibration or movement causes dropouts.
  4. Check sensor ground, reference, and signal continuity while moving the harness, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the wiring and ground remain stable, test the sensor for intermittent failure using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the pressure sensor connector.
  • Clean or repair loose or corroded connector terminals and restore a reliable sensor ground.
  • Repair chafed or vibration-sensitive harness wiring.
  • Replace the pressure sensor if it has intermittent output despite a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Intermittent pressure feedback can trigger harsh shifts or limp mode without warning. Avoid long or high-speed trips, and stop if the transmission begins slipping, shuddering, or losing drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
