What it means
The engine disconnect clutch actuator stays in the engaged state when release is commanded. Pure electric driving is not available.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch actuator releases the clutch when the TCM requests separation of the engine from the drive path, enabling the system's intended operating modes. P28F0 sets when the actuator remains engaged after a release command, which can result from a stuck actuator, blocked release pressure path, or debris restricting movement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator mechanically stuck on
- Release pressure path blocked
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data to verify that the TCM commanded clutch release while actuator feedback continued to show engagement.
- Check for related transmission or hybrid system codes and inspect the actuator connector, wiring, and accessible linkage for damage or obstruction.
- Use a suitable scan tool to command release and compare actuator movement and available clutch position or pressure data with the manufacturer's specification.
- If electrical command and feedback are correct, check the hydraulic release path for restrictions or pressure that fails to drop as specified.
- Inspect the actuator and clutch mechanism for sticking or debris using the manufacturer's service procedure if circuit and hydraulic checks pass.
Common fixes
- Repair a wiring or connector fault that prevents the release command from reaching the actuator.
- Clear a confirmed restriction in the hydraulic release path according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Clean or service a sticking actuator or clutch mechanism if the procedure allows it.
- Replace the actuator if it remains engaged despite correct electrical command and release pressure.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are abnormal, the transmission is in limp mode, or the vehicle cannot transition to the required drive mode; continued operation can worsen clutch or transmission problems. If the vehicle behaves normally, limit use and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
