What it means
The control circuit for the engine disconnect clutch actuator reports a circuit range/performance condition. Hybrid driveline coupling cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch actuator controls coupling between the engine and the hybrid driveline. The control module checks whether the actuator circuit behaves within its calibrated electrical and operating range; P287F sets when the response is out of range or does not match the expected performance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coil resistance out of range
- High-resistance contact in connector
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review hybrid and transmission live data for the actuator command and response, along with related codes.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect the actuator connector and accessible wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage that can add resistance.
- Check for signs of poor contact at the actuator connector, including terminals that are spread, oxidized, or not seated correctly.
- Measure the actuator coil and circuit response using the manufacturer’s wiring information and specification.
- If the electrical checks pass, use the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to assess the actuator’s operation and any related position feedback.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a confirmed poor connection at the actuator connector.
- Repair damaged or high-resistance wiring in the control circuit.
- Replace an actuator whose coil or response is outside the manufacturer’s specification.
- Repair a related feedback or control fault identified during testing.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only if engine and hybrid coupling remains predictable, and avoid hard acceleration or demanding trips because the system may limit driveline operation. Stop if the vehicle slips, shifts erratically, or enters limp mode; do not handle high-voltage components.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
