What it means
The control circuit for the engine disconnect clutch actuator reports a circuit low condition. Hybrid driveline coupling cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch actuator controls coupling between the engine and the hybrid driveline. The control module monitors its electrical circuit; P2880 sets when the circuit signal is lower than expected, which can result from a short to ground, an internally shorted coil, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in actuator coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review hybrid and transmission codes and live data for the actuator command and circuit status.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect the actuator connector for corrosion, moisture, or damaged terminals that could cause poor contact.
- Check the accessible control wire for insulation damage or contact with ground, especially near the actuator and connector.
- Test the actuator coil and control circuit for a short to ground using the manufacturer’s wiring information and specification.
- If the wiring and actuator pass, follow the manufacturer’s procedure to verify the control module’s output.
Common fixes
- Repair corroded or damaged terminals at the actuator connector.
- Repair a control wire that is shorted to ground.
- Replace an actuator with an internally shorted coil.
- Repair the control module or its connection if testing confirms its output is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the engine disconnect function is unreliable or the vehicle slips, shifts unpredictably, or enters limp mode. Stop safely if driveline control worsens, and do not handle high-voltage hybrid components.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
