What it means
The engine disconnect clutch actuator is commanded to engage but does not produce the expected motion. Actuator stuck in disengaged position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch separates the engine from the hybrid or transmission drive path when commanded, and its actuator moves the clutch into engagement. P28EF sets when the TCM commands engagement but does not see the expected actuator or clutch movement, consistent with an actuator stuck disengaged or inadequate engagement pressure.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator mechanically stuck off
- Hydraulic engagement pressure lost
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data for the clutch engagement command and the reported actuator or clutch position when the fault occurred.
- Check for related transmission or hybrid system codes that could explain missing actuator movement or pressure before testing the clutch itself.
- Inspect the actuator connector, wiring, and accessible linkage for damage, loose connections, or anything obstructing movement.
- Use a suitable scan tool to command clutch engagement and compare actuator feedback and, where available, hydraulic pressure with the manufacturer's specification.
- If electrical command and feedback circuits are sound, inspect the actuator and hydraulic engagement path for sticking, pressure loss, or debris according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged actuator connector or wiring preventing the engagement command from reaching the actuator.
- Restore hydraulic pressure by repairing a confirmed leak or fault in the engagement pressure path.
- Clean or service a sticking actuator or clutch mechanism if permitted by the manufacturer's procedure.
- Replace the actuator if it fails the commanded movement test after circuit and pressure faults are ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the vehicle cannot engage the clutch reliably, shifts harshly, or enters limp mode, because propulsion and gear changes may become unpredictable. Arrange prompt diagnosis; if the vehicle loses drive or behaves unexpectedly, stop in a safe place.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
