OBD-II fault code

P28F1: Engine Disconnect Clutch Pressure Sensor Circuit

What it means

The hybrid control module detects a generic fault on the engine disconnect clutch pressure sensor circuit. Engagement pressure cannot be monitored reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine disconnect clutch links or separates the engine from the hybrid drivetrain, and its pressure sensor reports clutch engagement pressure to the hybrid control module. This code sets when the module detects a fault in the sensor circuit and cannot reliably monitor that pressure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pressure sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check the pressure reading and related hybrid or transmission codes before clearing anything.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the disconnect clutch pressure sensor connector and nearby harness for looseness, damage, corrosion, or fluid contamination.
  3. Check the sensor circuit wiring and connector terminals for continuity, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Compare the sensor signal and reference circuits with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the fault is in the wiring or the pressure sensor.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test or replace the pressure sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure, then confirm the reading and clutch operation with a scan tool.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or contaminated pressure sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor terminal connections in the sensor circuit.
  • Replace a pressure sensor that fails the manufacturer's circuit or response checks.

Can I keep driving?

Because the clutch pressure may not be monitored reliably, shifting can become harsh or fail and the vehicle may enter limp mode. Avoid demanding driving; stop somewhere safe if it slips, shudders, or cannot select gears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
