What it means
The motor torque required by the auxiliary transmission fluid pump is outside the calibrated window for the commanded duty. Pump load too high or too low for expected operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
An electric or auxiliary transmission fluid pump supplies hydraulic pressure when the transmission needs it. The TCM monitors the pump motor’s operating torque against its command; P287D sets when the torque is outside the expected range, which can indicate excessive pump load or an abnormal fluid-related load.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump internal wear changes torque demand
- Fluid viscosity outside spec
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live data for the auxiliary pump command, motor torque, and any related transmission codes.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, and verify that the specified fluid is in use because fluid condition affects pump load.
- Inspect the accessible pump wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, or poor contact that could distort pump operation data.
- Listen for abnormal pump noise and check whether the pump responds consistently when commanded using a capable scan tool.
- Test pump operation and fluid condition against the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish excessive internal pump load from a fluid-related cause.
Common fixes
- Correct an incorrect fluid level or fluid type using the manufacturer’s specified procedure and fluid.
- Repair a damaged or poorly connected auxiliary-pump wire or connector.
- Replace a worn auxiliary transmission fluid pump if its torque demand remains out of range.
- Repair any internal hydraulic restriction or fault found to be overloading the pump.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid towing or heavy acceleration because abnormal auxiliary-pump operation can reduce transmission pressure and lead to missed or harsh shifts. If the vehicle slips, loses gears, or enters limp mode, stop safely and arrange recovery to prevent further transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
