What it means
The TCM has not learned the adaptive shift values needed for refined gear changes. The transmission operates with default values until adaptation completes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The TCM adapts shift control values to account for how the transmission responds as it changes gears. P287C sets when those adaptive values have not been learned, so the transmission uses default shift settings that may produce less refined gear changes.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Adaptation lost after battery disconnect or TCM reset
- Following major transmission repair
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review TCM codes and live data for the adaptive-value learning status.
- Check whether the battery was disconnected, the TCM was reset, or major transmission work was recently completed.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, since a fluid or transmission fault can interfere with adaptation.
- Inspect accessible transmission wiring and connectors for damage or poor connections that could disrupt TCM control.
- If no fault is preventing learning, carry out the manufacturer’s adaptive-value relearn procedure and confirm the TCM reports completion.
Common fixes
- Perform the manufacturer’s transmission adaptive relearn procedure.
- Correct the transmission fluid level with the specified fluid if needed.
- Repair damaged or poorly connected transmission wiring or connectors.
- Diagnose and repair any underlying transmission fault that prevents the adaptive values from being learned.
Can I keep driving?
If the only issue is a warning light and shifts remain predictable, drive gently and avoid towing or hard acceleration until the adaptation is completed. Stop driving if shifts become harsh or delayed, gears go missing, or the transmission enters limp mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
