OBD-II fault code

P27C1: Pressure Control Solenoid P Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

Pressure control solenoid P is commanded on but does not produce the expected pressure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Pressure Control Solenoid P regulates hydraulic pressure in the transmission when the control module commands it. The module compares the expected pressure response with transmission data; this code sets when the solenoid is commanded on but pressure does not respond as expected, which can happen if its spool is stuck closed or its hydraulic feed is restricted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck in closed position
  2. Hydraulic feed restricted by debris
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light may illuminate
  • Harsh or delayed shifting
  • Slipping or unexpected shifts
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check which shifts or operating conditions coincide with the pressure fault.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle’s specified procedure, since low or contaminated fluid can affect pressure response.
  3. Inspect the wiring and connector for Solenoid P for damage, loose fit, corrosion, or fluid contamination.
  4. Compare commanded pressure-control operation with available transmission pressure or input/output data to confirm the fault occurs when Solenoid P is commanded on.
  5. If electrical operation is present, have the hydraulic feed and Solenoid P spool checked for blockage or sticking, following the manufacturer’s service procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct the transmission fluid level or condition if it is outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the Solenoid P connector.
  • Remove debris restricting the hydraulic feed, if confirmed.
  • Repair or replace Pressure Control Solenoid P if its spool is stuck closed.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and towing; delayed or slipping shifts can worsen transmission damage. If the vehicle slips badly, shifts unpredictably, or loses drive, stop driving and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
