OBD-II fault code

P08BB: Pressure Control Solenoid L Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

Pressure control solenoid L is commanded on but does not produce the expected pressure. Spool stuck closed or hydraulic feed restricted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid L directs hydraulic pressure when the TCM commands it on. P08BB sets when that command fails to produce the expected pressure, which can happen if the solenoid spool is stuck closed or its hydraulic feed is restricted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck in closed position
  2. Hydraulic feed restricted by debris
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for transmission codes and review freeze-frame data, solenoid L commands, and any available pressure feedback to confirm the fault occurs when L is commanded on.
  2. Check transmission fluid condition and level according to the vehicle’s procedure, and look for contamination that could obstruct the solenoid feed.
  3. Inspect the solenoid L connector and wiring for faults that could prevent the on-command from reaching the solenoid.
  4. Test solenoid L electrical operation and compare its response with the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish an electrical fault from a hydraulic restriction.
  5. If electrical operation is correct, inspect the solenoid spool, feed passage, and valve body for sticking, debris, or restricted flow.

Common fixes

  • Correct fluid level or fluid condition according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection at pressure control solenoid L.
  • Clean a restricted solenoid L feed or remove contamination where service procedures permit.
  • Replace a solenoid L whose spool sticks closed.
  • Repair the valve body if debris or wear prevents the L circuit from supplying pressure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid continued driving if the transmission slips, misses shifts, or enters limp mode; insufficient pressure can overheat and damage clutch components. Arrange diagnosis promptly and stop if the vehicle cannot shift safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
