What it means
The transmission control module monitors the control circuit for pressure control solenoid N. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit that interrupts the solenoid’s control current.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The TCM sends control current through the circuit for pressure control solenoid N to regulate transmission pressure. This code sets when that control path is open, commonly because the solenoid coil has failed open or the control wire is broken.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open solenoid coil
- Broken control wire
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light may illuminate
- Harsh or delayed shifting
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for other solenoid circuit faults to check whether the open is limited to solenoid N.
- Inspect the solenoid N connector and transmission harness for a disconnected plug, broken wire, damaged insulation or corroded terminals.
- Check continuity through the solenoid N control circuit according to the wiring diagram, looking for an open between the TCM connector and solenoid.
- Test solenoid N’s coil against the manufacturer’s specification to determine whether the coil itself is open.
- If the solenoid and wire continuity pass, check connector terminal contact and TCM output operation using the specified diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the solenoid N plug if it is loose or disconnected.
- Repair the broken solenoid N control wire or corroded connector terminal.
- Replace pressure control solenoid N if its coil is confirmed open.
- Repair the TCM connector or replace the TCM only if the open is not found in the solenoid or harness.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing and high-load driving if shifting is harsh, delayed or limited, since solenoid N cannot be controlled through an open circuit. If the transmission slips, loses drive or enters limp mode, stop safely and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
