OBD-II fault code

P0767: Shift Solenoid D Circuit Stuck On

What it means

Shift solenoid D remains hydraulically active when commanded off — corresponding clutch or band cannot release. The TCM detects the missing release via gear-ratio error.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Shift Solenoid D controls hydraulic flow for certain gear changes, and the related circuit should release when the TCM commands it off. P0767 sets when the TCM detects that the Solenoid D hydraulic path remains active instead of releasing, commonly indicated by a gear-ratio mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid stuck open by debris
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan transmission codes and freeze-frame data to identify the gear change and conditions when Solenoid D was expected to release.
  2. Check the fluid level and condition for contamination or debris that could hold Solenoid D or its valve spool open.
  3. Inspect the transmission connector and accessible wiring for damage or fluid intrusion, while keeping in mind that a stuck-on code can have a hydraulic cause.
  4. Compare Solenoid D commands with gear-ratio and shaft-speed data during a controlled test to confirm whether the related circuit stays applied.
  5. Inspect Solenoid D and its valve-body passage for debris, sticking, or wear using the manufacturer’s procedure, then assess any affected clutch or band.

Common fixes

  • Correct fluid level and service contaminated fluid and filter as specified.
  • Clean and secure a contaminated or loose transmission connector.
  • Remove debris or sticking material from the Solenoid D valve passage as specified.
  • Replace a sticking Shift Solenoid D or valve spool.
  • Repair internal clutch or band damage if inspection confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the transmission shifts harshly, slips, or cannot release a gear; avoid heavy loads and long trips. A circuit that remains applied can overheat its clutch or band and cause more extensive transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
