OBD-II fault code

P0762: Shift Solenoid C Circuit Stuck On

What it means

Shift solenoid C remains hydraulically active when commanded off — the corresponding clutch or band cannot release, locking out shifts that depend on it. The TCM detects the missing release via gear-ratio error or output-shaft slip.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Shift Solenoid C directs hydraulic pressure for gear changes, and its commanded-off state should allow the related hydraulic circuit to release. P0762 sets when the TCM detects that the Solenoid C circuit remains hydraulically active when release is expected, often through a gear-ratio or shaft-speed mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid stuck open by debris
  2. Stuck valve spool
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for transmission codes and freeze-frame data, and identify the gear change or operating conditions when the TCM detected Solenoid C failing to release.
  2. Check the fluid level and condition, looking for contamination or debris that could keep Solenoid C or its valve spool from moving freely.
  3. Inspect the transmission connector and wiring for damage or fluid intrusion, while recognizing that this code indicates a stuck-on response rather than necessarily an electrical fault.
  4. Use scan-tool commanded-state and gear-ratio or shaft-speed data during a controlled test to confirm whether the hydraulic circuit remains applied after Solenoid C is commanded off.
  5. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure to inspect Solenoid C and its valve-body passage for debris or sticking before considering internal clutch or band damage.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level and service contaminated fluid and filter as specified.
  • Clean and secure the transmission connector if it is contaminated or loose.
  • Remove debris or sticking material from the Solenoid C valve passage as specified.
  • Replace a sticking Shift Solenoid C or valve spool.
  • Repair clutch, band, or other internal damage if inspection confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission cannot release a gear normally; avoid heavy loads and long trips. A clutch or band held applied can overheat and cause further transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
