What it means
The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel W of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS checks whether channel W reports a plausible voltage for its battery cell group and whether that reading tracks expected battery behavior. P0BAA sets when the W signal is outside the expected range or performance window, even if it is not simply a steady low or high reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense voltage drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and compare live W readings with neighboring cell-group channels to identify a persistent offset or implausible response.
- Inspect the W sense connector and wiring for corrosion, looseness, damage, or contact resistance that could shift the measured signal.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle procedure, test the W circuit connections and reference path for excessive resistance or drift.
- Review BMS data for how the W group reading changes with charging or vehicle load, comparing it with adjacent groups under similar conditions.
- Compare the W signal and circuit measurements with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish contact resistance, sensor drift, and an input fault.
Common fixes
- Reseat the channel W connector and secure the harness.
- Clean or repair high-resistance or corroded W circuit contacts.
- Repair damaged W sense wiring or its reference connection.
- Replace the affected sensing component or BMS input if W remains out of range after circuit repairs.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving limited and avoid heavy loads or relying on normal charging, as the BMS may reduce power when channel W does not track expected voltage behavior. If the vehicle enters limp mode or power becomes unpredictable, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
