What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel W of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS uses the channel W sense wire to read the voltage of its cell group. P0BAB sets when the W circuit signal falls below the expected level, leaving that group’s voltage measurement unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open in sense wire
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live channel W voltage with adjacent channels to confirm whether the low reading is specific to W.
- Inspect the W harness and connector for damage, corrosion, moisture, loose pins, or a wire contacting ground.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle procedure, test the W sense wire for a short to ground or an open.
- Check continuity and connector contact through the W circuit, paying particular attention to corroded pins that can add resistance.
- Compare circuit measurements with the manufacturer's specification and determine whether the low signal comes from wiring or the BMS input.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the channel W connector.
- Clean or repair corroded or damaged W circuit terminals.
- Repair an open or short to ground in the W sense wire.
- Replace the affected BMS component if the W input remains low with the circuit repaired.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and heavy acceleration because the vehicle may reduce power or limit charging when it cannot trust the channel W reading. If power drops significantly or the hybrid warning escalates, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
