What it means
The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel S of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS measures a high-voltage battery cell group through channel S and checks whether that reading stays within its expected range and tracks correctly. P0B96 sets when the channel S measurement is out of range or fails to match expected battery behavior, even without a simple low or high circuit signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense voltage drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare channel S with neighboring battery readings and its live-data behavior to identify when the measurement drifts or becomes implausible.
- With the vehicle powered down as the manufacturer specifies, inspect channel S connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a loose, high-resistance contact.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician check the channel S connector terminals for poor contact and verify the circuit connections.
- Test channel S wiring and connections for excessive resistance or a changing signal using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
- If the circuit checks pass, use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to assess channel S calibration and the battery monitoring input for drift.
Common fixes
- Clean or replace a high-resistance channel S connector or terminal.
- Repair damaged channel S wiring or a poor connection.
- Replace a channel S sensing element only if testing confirms it has drifted beyond the manufacturer's calibration range.
- Repair or replace the battery monitoring component if the circuit and sensing element pass.
Can I keep driving?
Because the BMS cannot rely on channel S’s cell-group reading, it may reduce power or restrict charging. Avoid demanding acceleration and arrange diagnosis promptly; stop safely if power is limited.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
