What it means
The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel Z of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system uses channel Z to measure a cell group in the high-voltage battery and checks whether that reading behaves as expected. This code sets when the Z-channel signal is outside its expected range or does not track correctly, even if it is not simply stuck low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense voltage drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare channel Z with neighboring battery readings to see how it departed from the expected pattern.
- Review channel Z live data during charging and normal operation, if available, and note whether it drifts relative to the other groups.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician inspect channel Z's connector and wiring for corrosion, loose contacts, or other sources of resistance.
- With the high-voltage system made safe using the manufacturer's procedure, test channel Z circuit continuity and contact resistance to the manufacturer's specifications.
- If the circuit checks out, evaluate channel Z's sensing element and associated cell group for drift or imbalance.
Common fixes
- Reseat a loose channel Z connector.
- Clean or repair high-resistance channel Z connector terminals.
- Repair damaged or deteriorated channel Z wiring.
- Replace the confirmed out-of-calibration sensing component or service the cell group if testing identifies it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the warning is active or the vehicle has reduced power or charging, since it may enter limp mode and lose electric range. Arrange diagnosis soon and avoid relying on EV range until the channel Z reading is corrected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
