OBD-II fault code

P0B9B: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense T Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel T of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS measures a high-voltage battery cell group through channel T and checks whether its reading stays in range and follows expected battery behavior. P0B9B sets when the channel T measurement is out of range or does not track correctly, rather than simply registering as low or high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense voltage drifted
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare channel T with neighboring battery readings and live data to identify when the measurement drifts or becomes implausible.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as the manufacturer specifies, inspect channel T connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a loose, high-resistance contact.
  3. Have a qualified hybrid technician check channel T connector terminals for poor contact and verify the circuit connections.
  4. Test channel T wiring and connections for excessive resistance or a changing signal using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
  5. If circuit checks pass, use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to assess channel T calibration and the battery monitoring input for drift.

Common fixes

  • Clean or replace a high-resistance channel T connector or terminal.
  • Repair damaged channel T wiring or a poor connection.
  • Replace a channel T sensing element only if testing confirms it has drifted beyond the manufacturer's calibration range.
  • Repair or replace the battery monitoring component if the circuit and sensing element pass.

Can I keep driving?

The BMS may reduce power or restrict charging because channel T’s cell-group reading is outside its expected behavior. Avoid demanding acceleration and arrange diagnosis promptly; stop safely if power is limited.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
