What it means
The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel W of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS monitors channel W to measure the voltage of a specific high-voltage battery cell group. P0BA9 indicates a general fault in the W sense circuit, so that group’s voltage measurement is unreliable; the code does not by itself identify whether the fault is an open, short, or cell imbalance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense circuit failed
- Wiring fault
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live channel W voltage with adjacent channels for an absent, implausible, or persistently different reading.
- Inspect the W sense circuit connectors and harness for damage, loose or corroded pins, and signs of overheating or moisture.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle procedure, check the W sense wire and connections for opens, shorts, and poor contact.
- Use available BMS data to compare the W cell-group reading with neighboring groups during the conditions shown in freeze-frame.
- Compare circuit and cell-group readings with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the fault lies in W wiring, the sensing input, or a battery group imbalance.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the channel W connector.
- Clean or repair damaged or corroded W circuit terminals.
- Repair an open, short, or other wiring fault in the W sense circuit.
- Have the battery group and BMS input assessed if W remains implausible with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and heavy acceleration because the BMS may limit power or charging when it cannot trust channel W. If power becomes severely limited or the hybrid warning escalates, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
