OBD-II fault code

P0B87: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense P Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel P of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery management system checks whether sense channel P reports a plausible voltage for its cell group and tracks changes as the battery operates. P0B87 sets when the channel P reading drifts or falls outside the expected performance range, so the reported group voltage cannot be trusted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense voltage drifted
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare channel P's live voltage with adjacent groups and its changes during driving or charging to look for drift.
  2. Note whether the fault occurs at particular temperatures or states of charge and whether power or charging is limited.
  3. With the high-voltage battery safely isolated under the vehicle's service procedure, inspect channel P wiring and terminals for corrosion, damage, or a high-resistance contact.
  4. Have a qualified hybrid technician compare channel P's reported value with the measured group voltage using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the harness is sound but the mismatch persists, check whether the channel P sensing element or battery monitoring module has drifted outside its calibration range.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair a high-resistance channel P connector contact.
  • Repair damaged channel P sense wiring that causes an unstable voltage reading.
  • Replace an aged sensing element if it tests outside the manufacturer's calibration range.
  • Repair or replace the battery monitoring module if it misreads channel P despite a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving limited and avoid heavy acceleration or relying on normal charging because the BMS may reduce power while channel P's reading is implausible. Stop safely if power drops sharply or additional high-voltage warnings appear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
