OBD-II fault code

P0B69: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense J Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel J of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery management system uses channel J to measure a high-voltage battery cell group and checks whether that reading stays within its expected performance range. This code sets when the channel J reading drifts or otherwise falls outside that range, even without a simple open or short.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense voltage drifted
  2. High-resistance contact
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare channel J live voltage with neighbouring groups as battery conditions change, looking for drift or an implausible reading.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the channel J connector and wiring for a loose or corroded high-resistance contact.
  3. Have the high-voltage battery isolated according to the manufacturer’s safety procedure before handling sense wiring.
  4. Test channel J wiring and connector resistance, and check for opens or shorts using the manufacturer’s diagram and specifications.
  5. If the circuit checks out, compare the channel J sensing input with the BMS calibration requirements to identify a sensing element or monitoring-circuit fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose channel J connection and clean or replace corroded terminals.
  • Repair a high-resistance contact or damaged section of channel J wiring.
  • Repair any open or short found in the channel J sense circuit.
  • Repair or replace the channel J sensing element or battery monitoring circuitry if wiring is sound and the reading remains out of range.

Can I keep driving?

Power output may be limited and charging may be slowed or refused while the BMS cannot validate channel J. Avoid long trips and relying on full electric range until the drift or circuit fault is corrected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
