OBD-II fault code

P0B50: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense E Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel E of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS measures a cell group through voltage-sense channel E and checks whether its signal behaves within an expected range. This code sets when the channel E measurement does not match the expected range or performance, even if the circuit is not simply stuck high or low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Poor connection or high resistance in the sense circuit
  2. Damaged sense wiring
  3. Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare channel E live readings with adjacent cell-group voltages during the conditions that set the fault.
  2. Inspect channel E's accessible wiring and connectors for corrosion, looseness, damage, or contamination that could add resistance.
  3. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, check channel E circuit continuity and look for shorts or excessive resistance using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Have a qualified technician compare the channel E signal at the battery sensing module with scan-tool data to locate a wiring-related signal discrepancy.
  5. If the channel E circuit and connections meet the manufacturer's specification, assess the sensing module for an input or processing fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a poor channel E connector connection.
  • Repair channel E wiring with damage or excessive resistance.
  • Replace damaged channel E terminals or connector components.
  • Repair or replace the voltage-sensing module if its channel E reading remains out of range with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the vehicle has reduced power, and avoid relying on normal EV range or charging until channel E is checked. The BMS may impose further power or charging limits because it cannot validate that cell-group reading.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
