OBD-II fault code

P0B68: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense J Circuit

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel J of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Voltage-sense channel J carries a high-voltage battery cell-group measurement to the battery management system. This code indicates a fault in the channel J circuit, so the BMS cannot rely on that group’s voltage reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in the voltage-sense wiring
  2. Loose, corroded, or damaged connection
  3. Battery monitoring module fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare channel J live voltage with neighbouring cell-group readings to see whether the signal is missing or implausible.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the channel J connector and wiring for loose connections, corrosion, damaged terminals, or chafing.
  3. Have the high-voltage battery isolated using the manufacturer’s safety procedure before handling its sense connections.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test channel J for an open or short and check connections against the manufacturer’s specifications.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, investigate the battery monitoring module input for a channel J fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the channel J connector.
  • Repair an open or shorted section of channel J wiring.
  • Replace corroded or damaged channel J connector terminals.
  • Repair or replace the battery monitoring circuitry if channel J wiring tests correctly.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may reduce power or restrict charging because it cannot verify the channel J cell-group voltage. Limit driving and avoid depending on electric range until the circuit fault is resolved.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
