OBD-II fault code

P0B4B: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense D Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel D of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery management system checks whether voltage sense channel D reports a plausible cell-group voltage as conditions change. This code sets when channel D’s reading falls outside its expected range or fails to track properly, rather than indicating a definite low or high circuit signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Poor connection or high resistance in the sense circuit
  2. Damaged sense wiring
  3. Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare live channel D voltage with neighboring groups under the recorded conditions to find an out-of-range or poorly tracking reading.
  2. With the vehicle powered down using the manufacturer’s high-voltage safety procedure, inspect channel D wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or poor seating.
  3. Check channel D terminals and accessible connections for looseness or resistance that could distort the reading.
  4. Have a qualified technician test channel D continuity and connection resistance against the manufacturer’s procedure and specification.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, have the battery voltage-sensing module evaluated for inaccurate channel D measurements.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or clean a poor channel D connector.
  • Repair damaged channel D sense wiring.
  • Repair a high-resistance terminal or connection in the channel D circuit.
  • Replace or repair the battery voltage-sensing module if testing confirms it is not measuring channel D correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if power is reduced or limp mode occurs, and do not count on normal electric range or charging until the fault is diagnosed. The system may restrict operation when channel D does not report a plausible voltage; keep clear of high-voltage wiring.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
