What it means
The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel M of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS measures a cell group through voltage sense channel M and checks whether the reading agrees with the circuit’s expected range and battery behaviour. P0B78 sets when channel M’s reading is out of range or does not track as expected, even if it is not simply a low or high circuit fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense voltage drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare channel M live voltage with adjacent channels over changing battery conditions to identify drift or a reading that does not track normally.
- Inspect the channel M sense wiring and connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or other high-resistance contact that could distort the measurement.
- Check whether channel M’s reported value changes smoothly and consistently compared with neighbouring cell-group readings during normal operation.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician measure the channel M circuit and connection quality against the manufacturer’s specification, following the required battery isolation procedure.
- If wiring and contacts are sound, investigate channel M’s sensing element or battery monitoring module for drift beyond its calibration range.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a high-resistance or corroded channel M connection.
- Repair damaged channel M sense wiring that causes an unstable or inaccurate reading.
- Replace the channel M sensing element if testing confirms it has drifted beyond the manufacturer’s calibration range.
- Repair or replace the battery monitoring module if the circuit and sensing element pass checks.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and unnecessary long trips while power or charging is restricted, because the BMS may limit the vehicle when it cannot trust channel M’s cell-group measurement. Have it diagnosed soon to reduce the chance of further power or charging limitations.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
