What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel J of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The high-voltage battery management system (BMS) reads the voltage of a battery cell group through sense channel J. This code sets when channel J's signal is below the expected range, so the BMS cannot rely on its reading to assess that cell group.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open in sense wire
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live readings for sense channel J, comparing its reported voltage with neighbouring channels to see whether J is unusually low.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the channel J sense-wire route and connectors for damage, corrosion, or moisture.
- Check the channel J connector is fully seated and its pins are clean and secure; corrosion can add resistance and pull the reading low.
- Have a qualified hybrid/EV technician test channel J wiring for a short to ground or an open circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and connections pass, verify the BMS measurement input and its reference supply against manufacturer specifications before considering module replacement.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose channel J connector pins.
- Repair an open or damaged channel J sense wire.
- Repair a channel J wire shorted to ground.
- Replace a faulty battery monitoring module only after its input and wiring have been verified.
Can I keep driving?
Because the BMS cannot reliably assess the cell group monitored by channel J, power may be limited and charging may be reduced or disabled. Avoid relying on the vehicle for long trips or demanding acceleration, and arrange diagnosis promptly; stop safely if a hybrid or battery warning indicates the vehicle is unsafe to continue.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
