OBD-II fault code

P08E6: Shift Solenoid L Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the control circuit for shift solenoid L. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit in that control path.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid L is an electrically operated valve that helps control transmission gear changes. The transmission control module monitors its control path and sets P08E6 when it detects an open circuit, interrupting the electrical command to the solenoid.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in control wire
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for other transmission codes that could point to a shared power supply, connector, or wiring problem.
  2. Inspect the solenoid L connector for a loose fit, broken wire, corrosion, or a pin pushed back out of the connector body.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to check continuity through the solenoid L control wire and its connections, with the circuit isolated as specified.
  4. Measure solenoid L coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to check for an open coil.
  5. If the coil and wiring pass, check the circuit at the control-module connector and perform a supported output test.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose solenoid L connector.
  • Repair a broken or disconnected wire in the solenoid L control path.
  • Replace shift solenoid L if its coil is open.
  • Repair a damaged connector terminal or a confirmed control-module circuit fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the transmission cannot shift normally or has entered limp mode; the open circuit can leave gear control limited and make merging or climbing unsafe. Stop if the vehicle slips or cannot hold a gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
