What it means
The control module monitors the control circuit for shift solenoid D. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit in that control path.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid D is an electrically operated valve that helps control transmission fluid flow for gear changes. The transmission control module monitors the D solenoid control path and sets P097D when it detects an open, which can prevent the valve from responding.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in solenoid control wire
- Open solenoid coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and transmission live data for when P097D set, and check for companion codes affecting solenoid D or its power supply.
- Inspect the D solenoid wiring and transmission connector for breaks, corrosion, loose pins, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
- With the circuit isolated according to the manufacturer's procedure, check the D solenoid coil for continuity and compare resistance with the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the D control wire end to end for continuity and check for shorts, flexing the harness gently to expose an intermittent break.
- If the coil and wiring pass, inspect the control module connector and D circuit terminals for a poor connection before suspecting the module.
Common fixes
- Secure or replace a pushed-back or damaged terminal at the D solenoid connector.
- Repair an open in the shift solenoid D control wire.
- Replace shift solenoid D if its coil has no continuity.
- Repair a confirmed fault at the control module connector or circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the transmission shifts harshly, slips, or enters a one-gear limp mode, and avoid towing or heavy loads. Continued operation during slipping can damage the transmission; stop if shifts make the vehicle unsafe to control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
