OBD-II fault code

P097C: Shift Solenoid C Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control module monitors the control circuit for shift solenoid C. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit in that control path.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid C is an electrically operated valve in the transmission hydraulic system that helps select or control particular gear changes. The transmission control module monitors the C solenoid's control path and sets P097C when it detects an open, so the solenoid may not respond to commands.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in solenoid control wire
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and transmission live data for the conditions when P097C set, and note any related solenoid or supply-voltage codes.
  2. Inspect the transmission connector and the wiring to shift solenoid C for damage, loose connections, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back into the connector.
  3. With the ignition off and the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check the C solenoid coil for continuity and compare its resistance with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Check continuity of the C control wire between the transmission connector and control module, and check for unintended opens or shorts while moving the harness gently.
  5. If the solenoid and wiring pass, verify the module connector and its C circuit terminals before considering a control-module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged connector terminal in the shift solenoid C circuit.
  • Repair or replace the open section of the solenoid C control wire.
  • Replace shift solenoid C if its coil is open.
  • Repair a verified fault in the control module connector or circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and unnecessary trips if shifts are delayed, harsh, slipping, or the transmission is stuck in one gear. Continued driving can worsen transmission damage; arrange prompt diagnosis and stop if the vehicle cannot shift safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
