OBD-II fault code

P097F: Shift Solenoid F Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the electrical path that commands shift solenoid F. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit in that path, such as a break in the wiring or solenoid coil.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid F is an electrical valve in the transmission that controls fluid flow used during gear changes. The transmission control module monitors the F solenoid command path and sets P097F when it detects an open circuit, so solenoid F may not actuate.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in solenoid control wire
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and transmission live data from the P097F event, and note any related solenoid F or circuit supply codes.
  2. Inspect the F solenoid wiring and transmission connector for a break, corrosion, loose fit, or a terminal that has backed out of the connector.
  3. Following the manufacturer's isolation procedure, test the F solenoid coil for continuity and compare resistance with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Check end-to-end continuity of the F control wire and look for shorts or a harness break that appears when the wiring is moved gently.
  5. If the coil and harness pass, check the control module connector and F circuit pin for damage or poor contact.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or replace a loose or backed-out terminal at the shift solenoid F connector.
  • Repair an open in the solenoid F control wiring.
  • Replace shift solenoid F if its coil is open.
  • Repair a verified fault in the control module connector or circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid long trips, towing, and demanding acceleration if the transmission is shifting poorly or locked in one gear. Continued driving with slipping or shuddering can increase transmission damage, so stop if the vehicle cannot shift predictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
