What it means
Current through shift solenoid L does not match the commanded value within tolerance. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid L is a transmission valve controlled through an electrical circuit, and the transmission control module compares the circuit's response with the commanded operation. P08E3 sets when that response is outside the expected range or performance window, even if the circuit is not simply open or shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coil resistance drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review solenoid L command and feedback data alongside transmission temperature and gear changes when the code set.
- Inspect the solenoid L connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, loose terminals, or pin push-back.
- Move the accessible harness gently while monitoring live data or the circuit signal to see whether the response changes.
- Measure solenoid L coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification, noting any drift when the component is warm.
- If the coil and wiring check out, use the vehicle wiring diagram and a supported scan-tool output test to compare commanded operation with the electrical response.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed wiring or restore a sound, dry connection at the solenoid L connector.
- Repair loose, corroded, or pushed-back terminals in the solenoid L circuit.
- Replace shift solenoid L if its measured electrical response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair a confirmed control-module or circuit fault if the solenoid and wiring pass testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads and continued driving if shifts are delayed, slipping, or harsh, because poor solenoid L control can disrupt transmission operation and trigger limp mode. Stop if the transmission cannot maintain a safe gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
