OBD-II fault code

P09A0: Shift Solenoid G Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control circuit of shift solenoid G reports a control circuit/open condition. Gear element actuation cannot be commanded reliably on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid G is an electrically controlled valve in the transmission that helps route hydraulic pressure for gear changes. The transmission control module monitors the G solenoid circuit and sets P09A0 when it detects an open path, so it cannot reliably command that solenoid.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in solenoid control wire
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and transmission codes, then check live data for commanded gear and solenoid G operation to see when the fault occurs.
  2. With the vehicle safely parked, inspect the transmission connector and the wiring to solenoid G for damage, corrosion, loose plugs, or a pushed-back terminal.
  3. Check continuity through the solenoid G control wire and its connections, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Test the solenoid G coil for an open circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, check the control module connector and its output circuit for an open before considering module failure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the transmission plug or secure a backed-out terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the solenoid G control circuit.
  • Replace the failed shift solenoid G if its coil is open.
  • Repair a damaged connector terminal or module-side connection.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission is in limp mode; a gear may be unavailable and continued slipping can worsen transmission damage. If it cannot select gears predictably, have it transported for repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
