What it means
A general fault in pressure control solenoid L. Detected via electrical resistance, response to commanded duty cycle, or downstream pressure measurement.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid L is an electrically operated valve that helps regulate hydraulic pressure in the transmission. The TCM sets P08BA when solenoid L has a general fault, such as an out-of-range coil response, an unexpected response to a command, or pressure that does not follow the command.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Aged solenoid coil resistance drift
- Worn valve body bore around the solenoid
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Scan for related transmission codes and check freeze-frame data, commanded solenoid L duty cycle, and available pressure readings.
- Inspect the transmission fluid condition and level using the vehicle’s specified procedure, since poor fluid condition can affect hydraulic response.
- Check the solenoid L connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, or damage that could distort its electrical response.
- Measure solenoid L coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification, checking whether the reading changes abnormally as the unit warms.
- If electrical checks pass, have the valve body and solenoid L hydraulic operation assessed for wear, including a worn bore that may prevent pressure regulation.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service fluid if its condition or level is outside the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged solenoid L connector or harness.
- Replace pressure control solenoid L if its coil resistance or response is outside specification.
- Repair or replace the worn valve body bore affecting solenoid L pressure control.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; poor pressure control can worsen shift quality and damage internal clutches. Have the transmission assessed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
