OBD-II fault code

P08BC: Pressure Control Solenoid L Stuck On

What it means

Pressure control solenoid L stays in the activated state when commanded off. Affected hydraulic circuit stays pressurised.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid L controls pressure in a transmission hydraulic circuit. P08BC sets when the TCM commands L off but the circuit remains activated and pressurised, pointing to a spool stuck open or an output that continues energising the solenoid.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck in open position
  2. TCM output driver stuck on
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan transmission codes and review freeze-frame data, solenoid L commanded state, and pressure feedback to confirm pressure remains when L is commanded off.
  2. Inspect the solenoid L connector and harness for shorts, damaged insulation, or contamination that could keep the circuit energised.
  3. With the correct wiring information, test whether the TCM output to solenoid L remains active when the command is off; follow the manufacturer’s test procedure.
  4. Check solenoid L electrical operation and determine whether it releases when de-energised, using the manufacturer’s procedure.
  5. If the electrical command switches off correctly, inspect the solenoid spool and valve body for sticking, debris, or a worn bore that traps pressure.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring that shorts the solenoid L control line or keeps it energised.
  • Clean or replace a solenoid L that sticks in the open position.
  • Remove debris or repair wear in the valve body that prevents the L circuit from releasing pressure.
  • Repair the TCM output driver if testing confirms it stays on despite an off command.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving with harsh shifts, slipping, or a gear locked in limp mode because pressure that remains applied can cause abnormal shifts and transmission damage. Stop if the vehicle cannot change gears safely and arrange prompt repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
