What it means
Shift Solenoid "D" Malfunction: the component is malfunctioning. Shift solenoids route transmission hydraulic pressure to engage the gears; faults cause harsh, delayed, or missed shifts.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift Solenoid D is an electrically controlled valve that routes transmission fluid for certain gear changes. P0765 indicates a malfunction associated with Solenoid D, but the code alone does not establish whether the cause is electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic; the TCM has detected that the circuit or shift response is not operating as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid stuck
- Open or shorted winding
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Scan for transmission codes and freeze-frame data, and identify which shifts or operating conditions coincide with the Solenoid D fault.
- Check fluid level and condition according to the vehicle’s specified procedure, looking for contamination that could affect Solenoid D movement.
- Inspect the Solenoid D connector and accessible wiring for loose pins, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or damage.
- Compare the Solenoid D command with gear and shaft-speed data during a controlled test to determine whether the fault appears electrical or hydraulic.
- Test the Solenoid D winding, circuit, and valve-body operation using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct low fluid level or service contaminated fluid and filter as specified.
- Clean and secure the Solenoid D connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Replace a failed Shift Solenoid D.
- Clear debris or repair a sticking valve-body passage affecting Solenoid D.
- Repair internal transmission damage if testing confirms a hydraulic or mechanical cause.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode. Continued driving with slipping or missed shifts can worsen internal damage; stop if the vehicle cannot maintain a safe gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
