What it means
A fault has been detected in shift solenoid C operation or its circuit. The code does not identify the cause or which gears the solenoid controls.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid C is an electrically controlled valve that routes hydraulic pressure inside the transmission. The control module detects a fault in solenoid C's operation or circuit and sets this code, but the code alone does not identify which gears it controls or whether the fault is electrical or mechanical.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid stuck
- Open or shorted winding
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and all transmission codes, then review live data for solenoid C commands and the shifts affected.
- Check transmission fluid condition and level using the manufacturer's procedure, since poor fluid condition can affect solenoid operation.
- Inspect solenoid C's connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or loose contacts.
- Use a scan tool's supported active test to command solenoid C and compare the response with the manufacturer's expected operation.
- If the circuit tests correctly but operation is still abnormal, test the solenoid winding and inspect the valve body for sticking.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level and service contaminated fluid according to the manufacturer's guidance.
- Clean and secure solenoid C's connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Replace shift solenoid C if it fails electrical or active testing.
- Clean or repair a sticking solenoid passage in the valve body.
- Repair worn valve body parts if inspection confirms they affect solenoid C operation.
Can I keep driving?
If the transmission is in limp mode, slips, or shifts harshly, avoid high speeds, towing, and heavy loads; arrange diagnosis promptly. Stop if it loses drive or slips severely to limit further transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
