What it means
The intake cam profile actuator (profile A, bank 2) stays engaged when commanded off — stuck in high-lift profile. Idle quality and emissions affected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The Bank 2 intake camshaft profile actuator controls the lift profile of that bank's intake valves. P003F sets when profile A remains engaged in the high-lift position after the module commands it off; a stuck locking pin, debris, or worn parts can keep the mechanism from returning.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Locking pin stuck engaged
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual Bank 2 profile A status with a scan tool to verify that it stays engaged after an off command.
- Check the engine oil level and condition, and note any oil-pressure warning that could affect the hydraulic actuator.
- Inspect the Bank 2 profile A oil control valve connector and wiring for damage, contamination, or poor contact.
- Test the oil control valve and its circuit using the manufacturer's procedure to confirm that it responds to the off command.
- If the control side works, inspect the Bank 2 locking pin and profile mechanism for sticking, debris, or mechanical wear.
Common fixes
- Correct low oil level or unsuitable or overdue oil using the manufacturer's specified oil.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector contacts at the Bank 2 profile A oil control valve.
- Clean or replace an oil control valve that is stuck open.
- Repair or replace worn or obstructed Bank 2 profile components that keep the actuator engaged.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, limit driving to gentle trips and avoid high engine speeds or heavy loads because Bank 2 may remain in the wrong intake profile. Stop if it stalls, runs very roughly, or shows an oil-pressure warning.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
