What it means
The intake cam profile actuator (profile A, bank 2) does not engage when commanded — stays in low-lift profile. Often hydraulic pin sticking or low oil pressure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The Bank 2 intake camshaft profile actuator switches that bank's intake valves between lift profiles. The module sets P003E when it commands profile A to engage but Bank 2 stays in the low-lift position, which may result from a sticking oil control valve, debris, or worn parts with excess play.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Oil control valve stuck
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual Bank 2 profile A status with a scan tool to identify when engagement fails.
- Check engine oil level and condition, since the profile actuator relies on the engine's oil supply.
- Inspect the Bank 2 profile A oil control valve connector and wiring for damage, contamination, or loose contacts.
- Test the Bank 2 oil control valve and circuit using the manufacturer's procedure to confirm that the valve is commanded and responds correctly.
- If the electrical and valve checks pass, check oil pressure and inspect the Bank 2 profile mechanism for debris, sticking, or mechanical play.
Common fixes
- Correct low oil level or unsuitable or overdue oil using the manufacturer's specified oil.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector contacts at the Bank 2 profile A oil control valve.
- Clean or replace a sticking Bank 2 oil control valve.
- Repair or replace worn Bank 2 profile components that prevent engagement.
Can I keep driving?
Gentle driving may be possible if the engine remains stable, but avoid high engine speeds and heavy loads because Bank 2 may lack the intended higher-lift response. Stop if the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or shows an oil-pressure warning.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
