OBD-II fault code

P005B: B Camshaft Profile Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that the Bank 1 B camshaft profile control is not performing as expected or is stuck off.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 B camshaft profile control uses a locking mechanism to hold or release the B camshaft profile as commanded. The control module checks whether the mechanism changes state as expected; P005B sets when the Bank 1 B profile control appears stuck off, with a locking pin stuck engaged among the possible causes.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Locking pin stuck engaged
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related camshaft timing, oil-pressure, or profile-control codes before clearing anything.
  2. Check oil level and condition, then confirm the oil meets the manufacturer's requirements because the locking mechanism depends on proper lubrication.
  3. Inspect the Bank 1 B profile-control wiring, connector, and oil control valve for damage, contamination, or a poor connection.
  4. Use a scan tool and the manufacturer's procedure to command the Bank 1 B profile change and observe whether the locking mechanism releases and feedback responds.
  5. If electrical control and oil supply are satisfactory, inspect the Bank 1 B locking pin and profile mechanism for sticking, debris, or wear as directed by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil level or service oil that is unsuitable or degraded.
  • Repair poor connections or damaged wiring at the Bank 1 B profile-control circuit.
  • Clean or replace a confirmed sticking Bank 1 B oil control valve or mechanism.
  • Repair or replace the Bank 1 B locking-pin or profile-control components if testing confirms they are stuck or worn.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration while the engine has reduced power, and stop if it stalls or runs severely rough. Continued driving with the Bank 1 B locking mechanism stuck can worsen power loss and fuel consumption.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
