OBD-II fault code

P2B53: A Camshaft Profile Actuator B Control Stuck On Bank 1

What it means

The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B on the intake side of bank 1 reports a control stuck on condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Profile actuator B controls the alternate intake cam profile on bank 1. The control module checks whether the mechanism releases from the high-lift profile when commanded; this code sets when it appears to remain stuck on, so bank 1 intake operation may not return to the expected profile.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator stuck in high-lift position
  2. Release pressure path blocked
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live commanded and reported profile states to confirm whether bank 1 intake profile B remains on after a release command.
  2. Check engine oil level and condition because oil pressure or a restricted release path can keep the high-lift mechanism engaged.
  3. Inspect the bank 1 intake actuator connector, wiring, and accessible release oil passages for damage, contamination, or blockage.
  4. Test the actuator control circuit and release command using the vehicle's service information.
  5. If the circuit and oil supply pass, inspect the bank 1 intake profile mechanism for carbon, debris, or binding that prevents release.

Common fixes

  • Correct unsuitable oil or an oil supply problem that prevents the bank 1 actuator from releasing.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections at the bank 1 intake profile actuator.
  • Clean a blocked release passage or contaminated mechanism where the service procedure permits.
  • Replace a sticking bank 1 intake profile actuator or mechanism that will not release.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high engine load and extended driving because the bank 1 intake profile may remain in high lift, causing poor running, reduced power, or stalling. Stop if the engine becomes unstable or stalls, and arrange repair before demanding use.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
