What it means
The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B on the exhaust side of bank 2 reports a control stuck on condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Exhaust-side camshaft profile actuator B on bank 2 changes the exhaust valves to a different lift profile. The module checks whether the actuator releases when requested; this code sets when bank 2 exhaust actuator B remains on or stuck in the high-lift state.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator stuck in high-lift position
- Release pressure path blocked
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to compare the bank 2 exhaust actuator B command with its reported profile state, especially when the fault was recorded.
- Inspect the bank 2 exhaust actuator B connector and wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or oil intrusion.
- Check engine oil level and condition for a possible cause of a restricted hydraulic release path.
- Run an actuator on/off test with a capable scan tool and watch whether bank 2 exhaust actuator B changes state and releases.
- Test the control circuit and inspect the exhaust actuator and release passage for sticking or carbon and debris according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct the oil level or replace unsuitable oil if needed.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring at bank 2 exhaust actuator B.
- Remove buildup or blockage from the actuator's release path if confirmed.
- Repair or replace bank 2 exhaust actuator B if it remains stuck after the circuit and release path are checked.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only a short distance gently if the engine is stable and the warning light is steady; avoid high load because reduced power or stalling may occur. Stop if it stalls or runs very roughly, since continued driving can worsen drivability and fuel consumption.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
