OBD-II fault code

P2B54: A Camshaft Profile Actuator B Control Stuck On Bank 2

What it means

The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B on the intake side of bank 2 reports a control stuck on condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Intake-side camshaft profile actuator B on bank 2 switches the intake valves to a different lift profile. The module monitors its control and whether the mechanism responds when commanded; this code sets when the actuator remains on or in the high-lift state instead of releasing as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator stuck in high-lift position
  2. Release pressure path blocked
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and cam-profile command or status at the fault conditions to see when bank 2 intake actuator B was expected to release.
  2. With the engine off, inspect the bank 2 intake actuator B connector and nearby wiring for damage, contamination, or a loose connection.
  3. Check the engine oil level and condition, since a restricted hydraulic release path can keep the intake profile engaged.
  4. Use scan-tool active tests, if supported, to command bank 2 intake actuator B on and off and compare its reported state with the command.
  5. Test the actuator control circuit and inspect the actuator and its release passage for sticking, blockage, or carbon and debris, following the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct the engine oil level or condition if it is unsuitable.
  • Repair a loose, damaged, or contaminated bank 2 intake actuator B connector or wiring.
  • Clear debris or carbon that is preventing the bank 2 intake actuator B release mechanism from moving freely.
  • Repair or replace the sticking bank 2 intake actuator B after confirming the fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, limit driving and avoid hard acceleration because power loss or stalling may occur. Stop if it stalls, runs very poorly, or the warning light flashes; continued operation can worsen drivability and fuel use.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
