What it means
Excessively high control voltage at the cam profile actuator (intake, profile A, bank 1). Typically a short to power or open ground.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 1 intake camshaft profile actuator controls profile A, a selectable cam-lift mode on engines equipped with that system. The engine control module monitors the actuator control circuit; this code sets when its voltage is higher than expected, often because the wire is shorted to power or the ground return is open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to battery voltage
- Open ground return path
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live actuator commands and related codes to determine when the bank 1 profile A circuit reads high.
- Inspect the actuator connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, damaged insulation, or contact with a power source.
- Check the control wire for a short to battery voltage and inspect the ground return for an open, following the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
- Test the actuator coil and connector terminals against the manufacturer's specification to rule out an internal actuator or connection fault.
- If the circuit and actuator test correctly, check the module output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a profile A control wire shorted to power.
- Restore an open ground return or repair a damaged ground connection.
- Clean or replace corroded or damaged bank 1 actuator connector terminals.
- Replace the actuator or repair the module circuit only if testing confirms that component has failed.
Can I keep driving?
A failed profile selection can cause reduced power, rough running, or stalling. Avoid hard acceleration if the engine is not running normally, and stop if it stalls.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
