What it means
The control module monitors brake pressure sensor J for a plausible signal. It sets this code when the reading is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected to pressure changes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Brake pressure sensor J measures hydraulic pressure for the brake control module’s ABS and stability calculations. C0640 sets when the module judges sensor J’s reading implausible or finds that it does not track pressure changes as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor reading drifted
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare sensor J’s live pressure reading with other pressure channels at rest and during controlled brake application.
- Inspect sensor J’s mounting and nearby connections for looseness or movement that could damp its signal.
- Check the sensor J connector and wiring for corrosion, moisture, loose terminals, or visible damage.
- Monitor scan data during gradual brake application to see whether sensor J responds smoothly and plausibly relative to other readings.
- If mounting and wiring are sound, test sensor J and complete any required calibration using the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure loose sensor J mounting or connections.
- Repair wiring or connector faults affecting sensor J’s signal.
- Replace sensor J if its output is confirmed to drift or respond incorrectly.
- Perform the manufacturer-required calibration or setup after repair.
Can I keep driving?
ABS and stability control may be disabled, and brake assist may be reduced even if basic braking remains. Drive cautiously and have the fault checked promptly; stop if braking performance or pedal feel changes.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
