OBD-II fault code

C0648: Brake Pressure Sensor L Range/Performance

What it means

The module compares brake pressure sensor L’s signal with the expected range and pressure behavior. It sets this code when the signal is out of range or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Brake pressure sensor L measures hydraulic pressure for the brake control module's ABS and stability calculations. C0648 means the signal is electrically present but falls outside the expected range or fails to change plausibly as brake pressure changes, which can point to sensor drift or loose mounting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor reading drifted
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and graph sensor L's live pressure reading while applying and releasing the brake gently; compare its response with other pressure readings.
  2. Inspect sensor L's mounting for looseness and its connector and wiring for damage that could distort an otherwise present signal.
  3. Confirm that the live reading changes smoothly and plausibly with pedal application rather than remaining fixed, drifting, or lagging.
  4. Check the sensor circuit and mounting condition against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the sensor.
  5. If the circuit and mounting are sound but sensor L remains out of range, test the sensor and module for an internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure sensor L if its mounting is loose.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector contacts affecting sensor L's signal.
  • Replace sensor L if it is confirmed to drift or respond incorrectly.
  • Repair or replace the brake control module only if testing confirms the module is at fault.

Can I keep driving?

Arrange prompt repair and drive cautiously, because ABS and stability control may be deactivated and brake assist may be reduced. Allow more stopping distance and avoid hard braking or low-traction roads.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
