What it means
Brake Pressure Sensor A Range/Performance: the signal is implausible or outside the valid range.
How it works
Brake Pressure Sensor A reports hydraulic brake pressure to the ABS module, which uses that information when managing braking and stability functions. C053D sets when Sensor A's reading is outside the expected range or does not agree with plausible brake pressure, rather than simply indicating a low or high electrical signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Brake pressure sensor fault
- Wiring or connector fault
- Hydraulic pressure problem
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- Traction or stability control warning light on
- ABS functions may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Read ABS freeze-frame data and compare Sensor A pressure with other brake-pressure data and the driver's brake-pedal input.
- With the vehicle stationary, observe Sensor A live data while applying and releasing the brake pedal to check for a smooth, plausible response.
- Inspect Sensor A's connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, fluid contamination, or damage.
- Check the sensor's reference, ground, and signal circuits using the wiring diagram and compare measurements with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the electrical signals are sound, check for hydraulic leaks, trapped air, or other pressure problems that could make the reading implausible.
- Compare Sensor A with Sensor B, if fitted, to help distinguish a Sensor A fault from a real hydraulic pressure issue.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged Sensor A connector or wiring.
- Correct a hydraulic leak or other confirmed pressure problem and bleed the system if required by the manufacturer.
- Replace Brake Pressure Sensor A if its output remains implausible with sound wiring and hydraulics.
- Repair or replace the ABS hydraulic unit or module only if testing confirms an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Braking may still work, but ABS, traction control, or stability functions can be limited because the module cannot trust Sensor A's pressure reading. Drive cautiously and arrange prompt diagnosis; stop if pedal feel changes or braking performance worsens.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
