What is the Jeep Wrangler?

The Wrangler is Jeep’s open-air off-road SUV. Its removable roof and doors, upright shape and four-wheel-drive focus give it a distinctive character. Later generations added a four-door body, giving passengers more space while retaining the model’s familiar layout.

The Wrangler’s identity is tied to Jeep’s history of utilitarian four-wheel-drive vehicles. Over successive generations, it gained comfort and convenience while keeping its open-air design and off-road role.

Wrangler generations

The generations are YJ (1987–1995), TJ (1997–2006), JK (2007–2018) and JL (2018–today). The TJ introduced coil suspension, and the JK brought the four-door Wrangler Unlimited into the range. Jeep describes the JL as a refinement of its predecessor, with more comfort and convenience while retaining the Wrangler’s established design and off-road focus.

Engines, power and fuel consumption

In the EU figures, engines range from 2.0 to 3.8 litres, with power from 130 kW (177 PS) to 350 kW (476 PS). The model has been sold with petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid power, among other fuel types in some markets. The mix varies by market: UK figures list petrol and diesel, while EU figures also include plug-in hybrids.

The lowest listed EU non-plug-in consumption is 9 L/100 km on WLTP; the plug-in hybrid weighted figure is 3.7 L/100 km on WLTP and assumes some driving is electric. The USA’s best combined EPA rating is 25 MPG. Canada’s lowest listed non-plug-in figure is 9.5 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. These results use different procedures: WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the USA and 5-cycle in Canada, so they are not direct comparisons.

Where was the Wrangler sold?

The Wrangler has been sold in North America and Europe. EU registration totals are 141,147 for 2010–2025. The 2.8-litre diesel rated at 147 kW (200 PS) led the listed annual results in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
