What is the Jaguar XJ?
The XJ is Jaguar’s flagship luxury saloon, a spacious four-door built for comfortable travel. It sat at the top of the marque’s saloon range, combining a formal cabin with the sleek, sporting character associated with Jaguar. The X351, the final generation, brought a more modern design while retaining the model’s aluminium-based construction.
XJ generations
The generations covered here are XJ40 (1987–1994), X300 (1995–1997), X308 (1998–2003), X350 (2004–2009, including X358), and X351 (2010–2019). The XJ40 marked a fresh chapter for Jaguar’s large saloon. X300 and X308 kept a more traditional, rounded appearance, with V8 engines in the X308. The X350 adopted an aluminium-intensive body, and the X351 carried that approach into a bolder design shaped under Ian Callum.
Engines and power
In EU registration figures, XJ engines ranged from 2.0 to 5.0 litres, with petrol, diesel and other fuel classifications. Listed power ran from 177 kW (241 PS) to 423 kW (575 PS). The 3.0-litre diesel featured prominently in early registrations, including a 202 kW (275 PS) version. Listed US and Canadian engines ranged from 3.0 to 6.0 litres; US versions also included flex-fuel E85.
How economical is the Jaguar XJ?
The lowest listed UK and French consumption figure is 6.1 L/100 km on the NEDC test. The lowest US EPA figure is 11.2 L/100 km, and the best listed combined EPA rating is 21 MPG. Canada’s lowest figure is 10.8 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. These results use different procedures: NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and 5-cycle in Canada. EU registrations totalled 35,604 between 2010 and 2020.
Where was the XJ sold?
The XJ appears in official figures for the EU, UK, France, US and Canada. The periods vary by market: US figures reach back to 1984, while the French figures cover 2012–2014. Jaguar Heritage identifies the X351 as the final generation; the last right-hand-drive example was built in 2019.
