What is the Honda CR-Z?

The Honda CR-Z is a compact, three-door hybrid coupe with a hatchback shape and a small rear seat. It pairs petrol-electric power with a distinctive, driver-focused design, making it an unusual take on the everyday hybrid.

Its low bonnet, wide stance and split-level rear glass gave the CR-Z a look of its own. The model also reflected Honda’s long-running interest in combining petrol engines with electric assistance.

Generations and engines

The CR-Z had one generation, listed from 2011 to 2016, with the codes ZF1 and ZF2. Honda introduced it in 2010 as a sporty hybrid. A notable feature was the pairing of its Integrated Motor Assist system with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The CR-Z used a 1.5-litre engine. EU and French power figures range from 84 kW (114 PS) to 89 kW (121 PS). In EU registration figures, 1.5-litre petrol versions were especially prominent in the early years.

How economical is the Honda CR-Z?

The lowest listed consumption is 5 L/100 km on the NEDC test in the UK and France. The US EPA rates it at 6.5 L/100 km, or 36 MPG combined. Canada’s lowest listed figure is 6.3 L/100 km on the 5-cycle test. These results are not directly equivalent because the European NEDC, US EPA and Canadian 5-cycle procedures differ.

In official EU registration figures, the CR-Z was recorded from 2010 to 2015, with 22,319 registrations. The listed years are 2012 to 2014 in the UK, 2012 to 2015 in France, and 2011 to 2016 in the US and Canada.

Where was the Honda CR-Z sold?

The CR-Z appears in official figures for the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada. Recorded fuel types vary by market: EU and French entries include petrol and hybrid versions, US entries are hybrid, and Canadian entries are petrol.
